Overview of Minimal Change Disease

What Is Minimal Change Disease?

Minimal Change Disease is the most common cause of Nephrotic Syndrome. It is often caused by the damaged glomerulus. This kind of kidney disease is typically a disease of childhood, but it also can occur in adults.

How is Minimal Change Disease Diagnosed?

Minimal Change Disease is often diagnosed depending on the medical history including symptoms, physical examination, blood tests and urine tests.

The common symptoms of Minimal Change Disease are edema, proteinuria, hematuria, shortness of breath, high blood pressure, hypoalbuminemia and so on.

Blood tests and urine tests includes microalbuminuria test, serum creatinine blood test, BUN blood test, 24 hours urine protein and so on. Under normal circumstances, there is no more than 80mg protein in the urine per day, and creatinine level ranges from 0.7 to 1.2 milligrams per decilitre for male adult and 0.6 to 1.1 milligrams per decilitre for female adult, the normal BUN is between 10 and 20 milligrams per decilitre for adults.

What Causes Minimal Change Disease?

What causes Minimal Change Disease has not known yet. But sometimes it occurs after viral upper respiratory, or in association with tumors such as Hodgkin’s disease, or with hypersensitivity reactions, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, pollen, dust, etc.

Symptoms of Minimal Change Disease

-Foamy urine, which may be caused by excess protein in your urine. Kidney helps to preserve protein in the body, once it is damaged, leakage of albumin follows.

-Edema, particularly around eyes and in the lower legs. It is mainly caused by loss of protein. When large amount of protein leaks into the urine, plasma osmotic pressure decreases, as a result, fluid permeates into the tissue space around, causing swelling. It may be also related to sodium and fluid retention.

There are also many other symptoms, such as hyperlipemia, hypoproteinemia, high blood pressure and so on. Different patients may suffer from different symptoms.

Treatment to Minimal Change Disease

First we must treat the identifiable causative diseases.

The additional treatment is with corticosteroids, such as prednisone and prednisolone, and hypotensive drugs, such as ACE inhibitors and ARB. Most patients response excellent and the symptoms can be controlled quickly, but the problem is that Minimal Change Disease relapses frequently with this treatment.

Traditional Chinese Medicine stereoscopic therapies, including hot compress, enema therapy, medicated bath, oral Chinese medicine, circle therapy, acupuncture and moxibustion. They cooperate with each other to help the body discharge toxin. They do not only improve kidney function, but also make the whole body harmonious. If your overall medical condition improves, relapse will not occur.

If Minimal Change Disease is left alone, it will develop to kidney failure and you have to live on dialysis or wait for a kidney transplant.

Diet for Minimal Change Disease

There is a general diet guideline for Minimal Change Disease patients.

-Low but high quality protein intake, such as lean meat, fish, milk, egg white and so on.

-Low sodium intake. Too much sodium will increase blood pressure and worsen edema.

-Limit the fluid intake.

-Eat fresh vegetables and fruits which is rich in vitamins, such as pepper, kiwi-fruit, onions, etc. They help boost your immune system and protect you from various disease.

-Eat food high in calory, which will lessen the proteolysis and its metabolic waste.
